UNIT 5: THE ECOSYSTEMS

 UNIT 5: ECOSYSTEMS

IN THIS UNIT WE ARE GOING TO LEARN:
a.-  WHAT AN ECOSYSTEM IS
b.- THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF AN ECOSYSTEM
c.- TYPES OF ECOSYSTEMS
d.- SOME EXAMPLES OF THEM

LET´S START KNOWING WHAT AN ECOSYSTEM IS.

An ecosystem is a place where  living and non-living things are interacting  between them.

LET´S WATCH THESE VIDEOS

b.- THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF AN ECOSYSTEM

1.- Living things in an ecosystem include plants (flora), animals (fauna), fungi and microorganisms.

2.- The non-living components of an ecosystem are: soil (with rocks and minerals), air, water, sunlight, temperature and climate.

3.- The place where a plant or animal normally grows or lives is called a habitat. The habitat of camels is arid areas and dry deserts.

4.- All living things adapt themselves to help them survive in their environment. Penguins, for example, have adaptations to protect them from cold temperatures.

5.- An ecosystem doesn´t have a particular size.

( Un ecosistema no tiene una forma particular).

6.- They can be very big, big, medium, small and tiny.

7.- A tiny drop of water is an ecosystem.

8.- The biggest ecosystem on planet Earth is the Earth itseft.

9.- Ecosystems can be terrestial and aquatic, natural and man-made.

c.-  TYPES OF ECOSYSTEMS

Natural ecosystems can be terrestrial or aquatic.

The Earth’s main terrestrial ecosystems are: tundra, different types of forests, different types of grasslands, tropical rainforest and desert.

Aquatic ecosystems can be marine; seas and oceans or freshwater; lakes, rivers,...

APART FROM THESE NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS, THERE ARE MAN-MADE ECOSYSTEMS AS WELL SUCH AS AQUARIUMS.
